Marine Acoustics with Trailmark

Marine acoustics / Quiet Vessel Initiative

Listening above and below the water.

Through my work with Trailmark in Saanich Inlet, I contribute field recording and acoustic analysis to the Quiet Vessel Initiative. The work documents underwater and above-water sound and examines small-engine noise.

My contribution

Field recording, recording workflows, acoustic analysis and practical training support.

Project context

Trailmark works with Tsartlip First Nation on sound monitoring in Saanich Inlet, connecting environmental listening with Indigenous stewardship.

Record, listen and document

A useful field recording connects what can be heard with where, when and how it was recorded. Hydrophones, portable recording systems and careful field documentation support that process.

Above and below the surface

Field recording brings together underwater sound captured with hydrophones and above-water listening, helping document different parts of the sonic environment.

Acoustic analysis

Listening and analysis examine small-engine noise within the recordings. The recording setup and field context matter when interpreting what has been captured.

Repeatable workflows

Recording procedures and documentation help teams connect observations with a place and a question, and organize materials for authorized use.

Practical support for Guardian work

The work contributes to Guardian training and community stewardship through recording workflows, acoustic analysis and practical support in the field.

My role is to bring professional recording experience to the team’s questions and priorities. Decisions about collection, storage, access and future use need to remain connected to the community’s authority and protocols.

Bring your listening questions

If your team is planning environmental recording or needs support with equipment, workflows, analysis or training, we can begin with a conversation about the place and the purpose of the work.

An introductory conversation is free. Consulting & project development is billed at $125/hour, with scope, estimated hours and deliverables agreed before paid work begins.
