Sound tells the story.

For me, sound carries more than half the film experience. With your eyes closed, you can often follow the story through voices, sound effects and music, feeling its tension and imagining its world. Watch the same scene without sound and notice how much of the story disappears.

Sound drives the story, whether you’re aware of it or not. A siren placed in the background of a tense scene can suggest danger beyond the frame and shift how you understand the moment. Every sound is a storytelling choice.

I work with filmmakers, producers, podcasters, authors and creative teams on sound design, dialogue editing, narration, voice recording and mixing, drawing on more than twenty years of professional sound experience. My background includes sound-effects recording for Airborne Sound, work at UBC Studios, and production audio for NBC’s coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Approach

Close listening

Attention to the story, the recorded voice and the details that make a scene convincing.

Recording and imagining sound

Recording with Airborne Sound

As a sound-effects recordist for Airborne Sound, I trained with Paul Virostek, whose field-recording credits include Batman Begins and Ali. My steam-train recordings remain among Airborne’s highest-grossing sound effects.

Foley and storytelling

I love Foley because it makes me think about how sound can move a story. For Thumbelina, I created the sound of a fairy’s wings by striking a silk flag laid over an old steering wheel with a feather duster.

Royal Hudson — Steam Whistle (2008)

In 2008, I recorded the Royal Hudson’s steam whistle in stereo. The power and texture of a steam locomotive are part of what drew me to field recording: the ability of sound to evoke an entire world, even without an image.
