Digitization at the En’owkin Centre

Language collections / work since 2020

Recording, digitization and continuing care.

Since 2020, my work at the En’owkin Centre has included Indigenous-language recording, audio and video digitization, file organization and archival workflows.

My role

Recording support, analog transfer, documentation and file organization.

What guides the work

Community direction, cultural protocols, consent and appropriate access.

More than a digital copy

A language collection brings together recordings, the information that identifies them and responsibilities to the people whose voices and knowledge they hold. Digitization is one part of that continuing care.

At En’owkin, my technical contribution has combined work on analog collections with recording support and practical processes for organizing and caring for the resulting files. The focus is on supporting the people responsible for the collection.

What the work involves

Audio & video digitization

Technical work on analog collections, careful transfer and documentation. My broader digitization approach considers the source, playback equipment, signal path and listening checks together.

Indigenous-language recording

Recording support alongside collection work, bringing professional voice-recording experience and close attention to the recorded voice.

File organization & workflows

Practical processes for organizing the files created through recording and digitization, with documentation that supports continuing care.

Community authority shapes access

Community direction, cultural protocols and consent guide the work. Creating a digital file does not make the recording public or change who has authority over it.

A digitized collection can remain restricted while becoming more usable for the people authorized to work with it. Technical choices should support those decisions.
