Portfolio

Selected work across Indigenous language collections, speech technology, marine acoustics and sound design. Each project is described through my role and its purpose; communities and collaborators retain authority over their knowledge and materials.

Language collections / ongoing

Digitization at the En’owkin Centre

Since 2020, my work at the En’owkin Centre has included Indigenous-language recording, audio and video digitization, file organization and archival workflows.

My contribution

Technical work on analog collections, careful transfer and documentation, recording support and practical processes for organizing and caring for the resulting files.

What guides the work

Community direction, cultural protocols, consent and appropriate access. A digitized collection can remain restricted while becoming more usable for the people authorized to work with it.

Language technology / MA 2024

Kʷu sqilxʷ & ReadAlongs

My MA project explored an interactive nsyilxcən digital edition through the relationships between recorded voice, written language and Indigenous methodologies. Related research was published with John Lyon, Miles Thorogood and Jeannette C. Armstrong in SIGUL 2024.

Contribution: audio and text preparation, language-technology development, interactive edition work and methodological research.

Continuing direction: training that helps language programs generate, review and maintain their own authorized ReadAlongs.

Marine acoustics / Trailmark

Listening above
and below the water.

Through marine work with Trailmark in Saanich Inlet, I contribute field recording and acoustic analysis to the Quiet Vessel Initiative (QVI). The work documents underwater and above-water sound and examines small-engine noise.

Hydrophones, portable recording systems and careful field documentation support the listening and analysis. The work also contributes to Guardian training and community stewardship.

Contribution: field recording, recording workflows, acoustic analysis and practical training support.

Training in the field

Environmental listening can help a team develop repeatable recording practices and connect observations with a place, a question and an authorized archive.

Professional sound / 20+ years

Audio craft as a foundation.

My background includes film sound design, production and field recording, voice recording, and interactive audio. I am an Emmy Award recipient, with sound-effects recording experience for Airborne Sound and dialogue editing on Skate 2 for Electronic Arts.

I have also contributed recording expertise to Bonnie Norton’s Canada Storybook work and related multilingual storybook initiatives. Across these settings, intelligibility, careful listening and respect for the recorded voice remain central.

Current services include studio podcast recording and production, narration and voiceovers, full-length audiobook narration for Audible through ACX, sound design, restoration and immersive listening work. Explore podcasting, narration and audiobooks →

SpokenWeb, poetry archives & podcast production

As a researcher in UBC Okanagan’s AMP Lab, I worked with Dr. Karis Shearer as part of the SpokenWeb consortium, helping digitize reel-to-reel and cassette poetry recordings from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. These included recordings made by Robert Hogg, Daphne Marlatt and George Bowering, supporting the preservation and creative use of a rich literary sound archive.

I also produced Robert Hogg & The Widening Circle of Return for the SpokenWeb Podcast, weaving interviews with Hogg, my former professor, together with archival recordings to explore his life, the TISH poetry community and the relationships sustained through poetry.
